Medical technology provider for India’s first PPP in Assam

Assam becomes the first state in India to roll-out a statewide (all district) free CT diagnostic initiative

The National Health Mission (NHM), under its free diagnostic service initiative in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Assam has announced the launch of free diagnostic CT Scan services for the people of Assam. The Honorable Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal and the Health Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma,  dedicated this service to the people of Assam at an event held in Guwahati. Assam becomes the first state in India to roll-out a statewide (all district) free CT diagnostic initiative.

Under this Public Private Partnership project, Spandan Diagnostic, the PPP partner for this project is implementing GE Healthcare’s Revolution ACTs 16-slice CT machine across each of the districts of Assam. Today, 16 centers are ready and the remaining will be operational in the next 3-4 months. Revolution ACTs, the first ‘Made in India’ CT is an advanced yet affordable CT scanner that is transforming the way trauma, stroke and other conditions are managed in India.

This initiative is extremely important considering the current healthcare scenario in Assam. According to a recent study, Assam has high rates of accidents and deaths in relation to number of vehicles on the road. Road accidents cause 50.4% death in Assam, a number significantly higher than the national average of 36.4% 1. The state also has a high incidence of stroke where six persons get stroke every hour and two become disabled due to it every hour. The yearly figure of stroke affected people in the state is 54,890 2.

GE Healthcare, through its PPP partners, has been actively working with many state governments in India to drive access to quality healthcare. It today has the highest Installed base under PPP with over 100 projects across India. GE Healthcare is also the largest technology partner for radiology PPPs in India with over 80 hospital radiology department running on GE technology. GE Healthcare and Spandan Diagnostics have been successfully partnering in PPP projects since 2009. Today 15 such partnerships are running across different locations in East India, outside of this Assam PPP project. Spandan Diagnostic has also installed the first PET CT scanner (GE’s Discovery PET CT) in the North-east region through a PPP partnership with North- East Cancer Hospital, Guwahati.

Since launch in mid-2015, it has been a runaway success, addressing health needs of critical patients, especially in tier-2 and beyond markets. About 75% of the orders are from markets outside of metro locations and about 60% of customers are new users.
