Rainbow Children’s Hospital launches bedwetting clinic in Bengaluru
The bedwetting clinic provides a comprehensive care for such children as one-stop destination
Soggy knickers, wet sheets and an embarrassed child is a familiar scene in many homes. For ages, bedwetting was considered as a simple condition that would resolve spontaneously. However, it is now regarded as a complex disorder involving several factors such as bladder dysfunction and the over-production of urine at night. Many such parents are confused as to how to overcome their kiddo's bedwetting problem.
For the first time in the city, expert pediatricians are joining hands to create a dedicated bedwetting clinic at Rainbow Children's Hospital, Marathalli. This is said to be first such clinic in the city that exclusively deals with bedwetting issues.
Bed-wetting (nocturnal enuresis) is a normal part of a child’s development and is quite common, affecting about one in five children. However, bedwetting, if not treated at the right age, can lead to feelings of shame and low self-esteem, preventing many patients from seeking treatment. If not treated at the right time, the problem of bedwetting can continue up to 15-25 years. Bedwetting is considered abnormal in any child who is more than 5 years of age and it can continue if 20-25 years if not corrected. There have been many examples where many adults suffer silently due to the social stigma attached with bed wetting.
Parents in foreign countries deal with it as a medical condition and take an expert opinion with Pediatric Nephrologists after five years if the child continues to face the problem. They support their kids and never scream or shout at them and handle with love and care. However, in India, parents often delay seeking the treatment as late as 8-15 years making the child suffer in silent agony and pain of this condition. It is very sad to see these kids suffer. In fact, in India, many parents beat their kids when they wet the bed.
The bed-wetting clinic was recently launched at Rainbow Children's Hospital, Marathalli, Bengaluru. Speaking on the occasion, Consultant Pediatrician and Pediatric Nephrologist Dr Saumil Gaur said, "At our Bedwetting Clinic, a detailed evaluation comprising of detailed history and physical examination along with assessment psychosocial impact of bedwetting on him/her is conducted. It may require basic urine/ blood tests along with a simple ultrasound scan and a detailed bladder diary which would record accurate input/output. Subsequently, a child is planned for appropriate medical therapy."
The bed-wetting clinic provides a comprehensive care for such children as one-stop destination and it ends the tiresome journey for parents to find all possible treatment under one roof; evaluation, treatment and follow-up happens here. Parents can also contact other parents and discuss their experiences and feel encouraged under the same bedwetting clinic. The bedwetting clinic caters to psychological stress of both parents and children who are suffering by providing them proper scientific counselling sessions and guidance which reduces the suffering of such kids by great extent.
