Aster Ramesh Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh recently performed a transcatheter invasive MitraClip procedure on a 78-year-old man with a history of cancer and coronary stent angioplasty. The patient was admitted due to breathlessness and fatigue, and a cardiac examination revealed a leakage in the mitral valve. The MitraClip procedure, which is used to treat heart valve leakage and left ventricle pump failure, was performed for the first time in Andhra Pradesh.
Previously, patients with this condition had limited treatment options and were only given medications, as surgery was considered high risk with poor results. However, the use of a Mitra clip has significantly prolonged the lifetime of subsets of patients who were previously given only two to three years to live.
The medical team at Aster Ramesh Hospitals, including Dr Naga Sri Haritha and Dr Daggubati Ramesh, both senior cardiologists, suggested the MitraClip procedure instead of valve replacement surgery due to the patient’s age and medical history. The procedure is a medical technique that can provide comfort to patients with mitral valve leakage. Only a limited number of centers in India are equipped to perform this surgery successfully, and Aster Ramesh Hospitals is one of them.
Dr Pothineni Ramesh Babu, Chief Cardiologist and Managing Director of Ramesh Hospitals, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to adopting advanced medical procedures that can not only save lives but also prolong life. In the past, the hospital had performed other advanced medical procedures, such as invasive trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), for the first time in Andhra Pradesh.
The medical team that performed the MitraClip procedure included Dr PNS Haritha, an interventional cardiologist, Dr Bikas Sahu, a cardiac anesthetist, and Dr Jayaram Pai, a senior consultant cardiac surgeon at Aster Ramesh Hospital.
