Meghalaya honors cancer survivors

Meghalaya celebrates National Cancer Survivors Day, recognizing the strength of cancer survivors and raising awareness about cancer care in the region.

Meghalaya celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day at the DAE-Civil Hospital Cancer Wing in Shillong. The event honored cancer survivors and raised awareness about cancer care in the region.

Dr Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, said the government is committed to providing the best possible treatment for cancer and is working to bring the latest medical equipment and facilities to every district.

“We have a long journey ahead, we shall not stop, we shall not say that we have done it all. Together this government will serve the people. It is not individuals, or ministers or any other doctor or staff, but together we will fight this,” she said.

Sampath Kumar, Principal Secretary, Department of Health & Family Welfare, said listening to cancer survivors gives hope that early detection can cure cancer. “By listening to our cancer survivors, it gives us a lot of hope, that if detected early, we can actually cure cancer. The key message here is that awareness is very important,” he said. The cancer wing of Civil Hospital, Shillong, provides care for over 7,000-8,000 patients every year, with the government spending nearly 9 percent of the state budget on healthcare. Dr FV Kharshiing, Director, Health Services, emphasized the importance of continued support for cancer patients and combined efforts.

“From shared experiences, we have learned that power to combat cancer lies within our heart and our souls. It’s about maintaining a positive mindset, believing in our ability to overcome challenges, and spreading awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention,” he said.

Cancer survivors shared their testimonies, urging early screening and treatment. One survivor said, “I am thankful to doctors and healthcare providers at Civil Hospital, Shillong, who provided me with the best treatment. I urge everyone to not be afraid, but to make the best possible use of the early screening and treatment facilities that are being provided.”

The government has launched a cancer helpline number 14410 to avail free screening.
