Experts say that men between the ages of 25 and 40 have seen a discernible drop in their sperm counts. Lack of exercise, improper lifestyle choices, poor eating habits, stress, pollution in the environment, and addictions are all contributing factors. Environmental pollutants also have an impact. A balanced diet, consistent exercise, stress-reduction techniques like yoga and meditation, and abstaining from drug and steroid abuse are all crucial in addressing this.

Age-related declines in sperm count are not as severe for males as they are for women, although sperm health is influenced by a variety of factors. The evolving way of life is one of the main causes. Fertility is greatly impacted by low sperm count (oligozoospermia) and sperm lacking in semen (azoospermia). Lack of exercise and poor food choices have an effect on the male reproductive system. Fast food and processed snack consumption can cause obesity and expose the body to toxic substances that lower sperm production. Environmental contaminants including bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates alter hormone levels and deteriorate the quality of sperm. Stress raises cortisol levels, which has a detrimental effect on sperm health and testosterone production, according to Dr. Sulbha Arora, Clinical Director, Nova IVF Fertility in Mumbai.

Dr. Ankita Kaushal, Consultant – Fertility & IVF Specialist, Motherhood Fertility & IVF, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai added, “Currently, not only females are experiencing fertility-related issues but even males too. There is a distressing decline in sperm count among men aged 25-40 due to factors such as environmental pollution, poor diet inclusive of processed foods, sedentary lifestyles involving the absence of physical activity, prolonged sitting, and stress (because of personal or professional reasons). It is necessary for men should adhere to a healthy diet, regular exercise, stress management techniques such as meditation, and minimize exposure to chemicals. Maintaining a healthy weight, and cutting down on alcohol, and tobacco use can also help to improve sperm quality and quantity. For tailor-made treatment options,  visit a fertility consultant who will conduct tests and come up with tailored recommendations based on one’s requirements.”

Dr. Sulbha Arora goes on to advise men to eat a diet high in antioxidants and good fats in order to enhance the health of their sperm. It is advantageous to eat whole grains, legumes, lentils, soybeans, eggs, bananas, walnuts, tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, and green leafy vegetables. Additionally recommended are regular exercise, yoga, meditation, and avoiding tobacco, smoking, and substance addiction. Sperm count and semen quality can be considerably increased by maintaining an ideal body mass index (20–25 kg/m2) and making sure you get 8–9 hours of sleep per day. Just like women, males should prioritize their sexual health.
